Protecting your golf cart when it's not in use is very important to any golf cart owner, and one of the key items for assisting you in this task is the golf cart's cover. There are a number of different covers out there, however -- which is right for your cart, and do you need more than one?

What are some of the different cover types out there for a golf cart, and what should you be keeping in mind as you select one -- or more than one, for different needs -- for your cart? This two-part blog series will look at several important concepts to think about.
Why Covering the Golf Cart Matters
First and foremost, before we get into the types of covers available, it's important to look at why covering the golf cart is so important in the first place. There are a few key reasons:
To keep it clean: Even if you're driving your golf cart only on manicured greens or well-groomed paths, there's still going to be dirt, dust, and debris that can accumulate on it. A good cover will help keep the cart clean when it's not in use, so it will be ready to go when you are.
To prevent damage: The elements can wreak havoc on any golf cart if it's left uncovered for long periods of time. A cover will help protect your cart from all of these risks.
To deter theft: If a would-be thief can't see what kind of golf cart you have, they may be less likely to target it for theft. A cover will often stop this from being the case.
Differentiating Between Golf Cart Cover Types
While these may bleed into one another just a bit depending on who you talk to, there are a few specific categories of golf cart cover to consider:
Dust cover: Typically used during storage, these are designed to keep your golf cart clean and dry. They're not waterproof, however, so don't use them if rain or snow is in the forecast!
Enclosure: An enclosure provides protection from both the weather and would-be thieves, as it typically covers the entire golf cart. These can be made of different materials depending on your needs and budget, from soft-sided covers to hard-sided vinyl or aluminum models.
Top: Generally utilized during actual driving and not for storage, a golf cart top can provide sun protection or even just a bit of shelter from rain. These are generally made of either vinyl or polyester.
